BTOWN JAZZ FEST

The great American tradition of jazz in the heartland

Free Festival Lineup

We're making jazz accessible to all by packing two days full of national, regional, and local acts as they share their love for jazz and its many iterations. They'll be playing everything from swing to latin and ragtime to contemporary.

Community Celebration

Taking place in the heart of downtown Burlington, explore the many venues, restaurants, bars, and businesses celebrating the great American artform of jazz through art, activities, special menu items, and more.

Historical Backdrop

Immerse yourself in Burlington's rich history as the birthplace of Bart Howard and a 1920s hideaway for Chicago mafia members. This festival aims to revive the cultural movement that first made it a hotbed for the arts.

Reviving Burlington's Roots

In 1963, Gene Bredar, a National Bank officer, and Will Schnering, Chamber of Commerce manager, were brainstorming ways to revitalize Burlington, which was experiencing a downturn. They suggested a music festival to showcase the city's historic links to the Mississippi River, and the name "Steamboat Days" was born. The Dixieland Jazz Festival was a later addition to the Steamboat Days event, further enhancing the festival's musical offerings and drawing in a diverse audience, with Louie Armstrong performing in 1964.

Fundraising for the festival

Big plans require big budgets. In order to fully realize our dream of supporting the local arts scene, booking culturally significant acts, and putting Burlington on the map, we need to raise $10,000 in funding.
